Activity using Cacoo

Level: 4th year, secondary school
Age: 15-16 year-olds
Topic: WWI Mind Map

As we have been reading about and studying the World War I, it’s time to summarize all they we have learned in a mind map. To do this, the teacher will first agree with the students on the categories they are going to include in their mind maps. The teacher will ask the students what they found most interesting about the war and what they believe are the most important facts.

The idea is that the whole class agrees on the following categories and if they feel that necessary to add another one, they will be free to do so: dates, causes, significant events, important people, impact on Europe, opposing forces.

The teacher will explain to the students how to use this tool and will show them an example of the expected final product.

The students will work in small groups. They will first select the information they are going to read and spot the main ideas. Then, they are going to make a first draft of their mind maps showing how they are going to organize the categories, how they are going to connect the events, if they are going to include any links to some external source, etc. When they have an idea of what they are going to include, they are going to go to the computer lab and start creating the mind maps. They can choose any of the formats that are available on the webpage.

What next:
Each group will have to deliver an oral presentation about what have done, how they decided on what to include and how they defined the organization criteria, if they divided the work and each member had a specific responsibility, etc. besides, they will have to reflect on what they found most interesting, easiest and most difficult about this activity. Then, all the students will share their mind maps to see how other groups did it.

Evaluation criteria:
- Appropriate use of the tool.
- Group collaboration
- Appropriate use of vocabulary.
- Accurate connections between facts and evidence presented (both orally and visually)
- Accurate use of information
- Oral presentation: organization, fluency, timing (they will have 5 minutes to present their work) and clarity.
