What's Wordle ?
Wordle is a toy for generating " Word clouds" for text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts , layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to your desktop to use as you wish.
Pedagogical implications

Working with images in the classroom is useful for two particular aspects: one for vocabulary retrieval learning and the other as a visual aid. As Mgter. Marcela Morchio points out , in the classroom setting, words can be turned into simple images as shown in what are called word clouds which are a favourite and are at your disposal in many different labels and formats ( Tagxedo, Wordle, Tagul ,etc). Whenever you work with a text , it should be remembered that students do not favor a linear processing of information In fact a depicted text might not be easily processed and hence understood by a digital native. If a phrase outstands , it acts as an image because it portrudes and this saliency makes it function as an image. Students will read this not as a mere array of words, but as an image and as such it has a different impact on their learning process.
Phrases can be used as images any time the teacher wants to call the students attention, to make explanations or meanings more remarkable, to highlight a mispronounced word during an oral interaction activity.
Morchio notes that "teachers only need to remember that students have developed a massmediatic subjectivity for which a simple drawing such as a word within a bubble or a cloud on the blackboard. can perform the function of an image and thus be conductive to more effective learning." (p.80)
According to Laufer et al (2008) knowing a word entails a continuun of subprocesses: passive recognition, active recognition, passive recall, and active recall. The last process , active recall, is the retrieval of the correct lexical ítem ( in terms of form and meaning) from within the mental repertoire. The use of pictorial material has long been recommended to enhance vocabulary learning as a way to store meaning ( Nation 1990) both linguistically and visually ( Nation 2006:85). Likewise, pictorial material seems to help speed up vocabulary retrieval.

Students will be given a short text about a famous celebrity. Clue words will be highlighted. They will have just ten minutes to read for a gist. Then ,the teacher will ask some broad reading comprehension questions.

Once students have looked up for the highlighted words, they will need to write a context for each of them. Finally they will create a Word Cloud for the words students have been working with.
